Regarded as one of Denmark’s most prominent artists, realist painter Michael Ancher (1849-1927) is best known for his paintings of the rugged fishermen in Skagen. Parallel to this, Michael Ancher however explored a very different set of motifs in his portraiture of women.
Ancher’s life size portraits of his wife, the painter Anna Ancher, match the monumentality of his painting of the hardships of heroic fishermen. In his other paintings of women, Michael Ancher articulates a different, quieter sentiment in a lighter palette.
The exhibition presents works by Ancher together with sketches and drawings to explore how Michael Ancher developed his paintings, as well as how Ancher developed as an artist.
