Historical Hjørring

The town of Hjørring oozes with history. The area surrounding the street Nørregade is the oldest part of Hjørring. Here you will still find old buildings and historical streets.

The three churches

Already in the early Middel Ages three churches were built in Hjørring: Sct. Hans Kirke, Sct. Olai Kirke and Sct. Catharinæ Kirke. The churches were built a stone's throw from each other, and they set the scene for you to embark upon a cultural-historical walk through eight centuries. During the Middle Ages southwest of the town the chapel of  Sankt Knuds Hellig Kors was to be found. The chapel was associated with a well-visited holy spring. Today you will find a park here instead called Sct. Knuds Kilde. In the late 1400s the chapel Sankt Annæ was founded in association with Sct. Catharinæ Kirke. The chapel had most likely been affiliated with a hospital. In 1549 the town got its own Latin school, which was established in a house made of stone near the walls of the cemetery of Sct. Catarinæ Kirke.

The old town of Hjørring

The street Strømgade is the oldest part of the pedestrian precinct and the street was named after a small brook called Strømmen. The area surrounding Nørregade is the oldest part of Hjørring. Here you will find historical buildings, the three churches and Vendsyssel's Historical Museum.

Vendsyssel Historical Museum

Vendsyssel Historiske Museum - Vendsyssel's Historical Museum - has a large collection of local historical treasures. The museum is built from historical buildings, e.g. Skolegade 8, which is the oldest school in Hjørring, built in 1825. The last execution in Hjørring took place in July 1822. A farm owner from the town Sønder Økse near Brovst, named Thomas Thomasen – also known as Bisp, was sentenced to death by decapitation. The Historical Archives at the museum has a notebook that depicts the execution and the removal of the body.
